The National Hurricane Center communicates tropical cyclone hazard information to the public, but this information does not currently consider the consequences and vulnerabilities of the built environment and population impacted. We seek to develop a more holistic understanding of risk by merging our hazard information with consequence and vulnerability information in a new impact-based modeling framework. Such impact-based guidance would enhance our communication of risk, especially to the most vulnerable populations and to our decision-making partners. This effort aligns with the mission of the National Weather Service to provide impact-based decision support services for the protection of life and property. This presentation aims to bring together diverse fields in the research and operational communities on this risk-based modeling effort, which ultimately aims to improve the communication of tropical cyclone hazard risk.
