Ever since the introduction of dual –polarization, for meteorological radars, this field has seen immense grown over the past three decades, to the point that dual-polarization radar has become a standard instrument for operational and research purposes. In addition to the measurement of differential reflectivity and differential phase, eventually the full matrix measurements were introduced. A combination of dual-polarization radar products such as, differential reflectivity ( Zdr ), specific differential phase ( Kdp ), and co-polar correlation coefficient ( hv ), in addition to reflectivity were used for hydrometeor classification. However since then the “fundamental nature of using dual-polarization “, has seen lot more applications beyond the basic process of rainfall estimation and hydrometeor classification. One such application is attenuation correction. This paper summarizes a series of significant applications involving polarization diversity that is beyond the original measurement of backscatter scattering matrix of precipitation.
