The AMS formed the ACUF (Ad-Hoc Committee on Uncertainty in Forecasts) back in 2007, and this committee released a detailed report in 2011 with recommendations as to how uncertainty in weather forecasts can be communicated more effectively. Still, the broadcast community has been reluctant to embrace this new approach for a variety of reasons, some of which may relate to a concern that a broadcast meteorologist will be perceived as "wishy-washy" as opposed to "committed". Last year, I touched on a few ideas as to how ensembles could be used in a television weathercast. This year, I will show real examples of how we have used probabilistic information on the air at WRAL-TV.
