"Sandy" appears unique in it's evolution, intensity, and track. That said, the Thanksgiving Storm of 1950 had a number of synoptic similarities...the main item missing was a tropical cyclone. Even so, the temperature contrasts were considerably larger and extreme, the snowfall totals over the Appalachians and westward were much greater, and the winds over the New York City area northeastward through New England were higher with the 1950 Thanksgiving Storm! The large scale synoptic setting from the surface and upward through the atmosphere shared many of the same characteristics, and the cyclones took tracks that were somewhat similar in behavior.
