How many times has a broadcaster been told her/his weather app is wrong? With the proliferation of weather apps on smartphones and graphical forecasts online, the public often gets forecast data with no explanation.

Perhaps most confusing on weather app and website displays is when the low temperature is valid. A low temperature forecast of freezing or below freezing can result in transportation hazards as well as threats to plumbing, plants, animals and people. Which day and what time of day that low temperature occurs can be critical.

The low temperature on weather app and weather widget forecasts is often placed after the high temperature but meteorologists know the low routinely occurs before the high. Many apps display the morning low for a day in the column or row for the previous calendar day. What's a user to think? ...that the app is wrong! Is the app wrong, is the user wrong or is the layout of the data misleading? We look at different examples to examine how to improve the visual layout of weather app and widget forecasts to minimize misinterpretation.
