The National Weather Service's (NWS) Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has been forecasting Day 1 and Day 2 Fire Weather forecasts for the contiguous United States since 1998. There are five dedicated forecasters who issue these forecasts once a day at 4 AM Central Local Time. The criteria and forecasting techniques have evolved since the start of this national fire weather program through internal review of the product, interaction with the NWS field offices and other fire weather customers. The SPC is developing a verification scheme to determine the accuracy of this product for use during the 2001 Fire Weather season. This paper will describe the parameters used in the verification scheme. Also, the results from the 2001 fire season will be presented along with planned future enhancements.
