The climate emergency that we are facing will not be solved with the same level of thinking as when the problems were created. In order to stop lighting fossil carbon on fire, we are going to need to take bold steps - and quickly! As television meteorologists, we have a unique opportunity and responsibility to educate our viewers. We are often asked to explain science related topics that are not weather related - meteor showers, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes - why would we shy away from climate science? It is not acceptable for weather-casters the avoid teaching their audience the truth about global warming, simply because it might make certain viewers angry or uncomfortable. Research shows that the meteorologist is usually the most trusted member of the broadcast news team. We can help our audience understand the facts about the impact of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels. In the current political climate and with the amount of pseudo-science available to the public, it truly is vital that broadcast meteorologists provide the correct information to viewers and voters!
