#ShowYourStripes Day

Conference: American Meteorological Society’s 50th Conference on Broadcast Meteorology

Abstract Deadline: 6 March 2023

Proposed session: 15 minute presentation

Requested session date: 21 June 2023

Presenter: Casey

June 21st is the sixth annual #ShowYourStripes day — an opportunity to spread awareness about climate change and rising global temperatures with the iconic warming stripes. Developed by Professor Ed Hawkins, a climate scientist at the University of Reading, warming stripes are a visual representation of the change in the average temperature over the past 100+ years for a given geographic area. For virtually every country or region, the stripes turn from primarily blue to primarily red, illustrating local to global climate warming.

In this presentation, we will discuss the history and message behind the warming stripes to encourage attendees to amplify these visually powerful tools. Conversations regarding climate change often take on a ‘doom-and-gloom’ tone; however, #ShowYourStripes day is an opportunity for the broadcast meteorology community to passionately and resoundingly express its commitment to address the great challenges presented by climate change.

Warming stripes have the potential to both expose a wide audience to these challenges and convey hope that solutions exist. Through this presentation, our goal is to inspire attendees to participate in #ShowYourStripes day and to more broadly support the mission to make accurate and effective climate change communication ubiquitous, reinforcing the message that no generation in human history has shared a greater responsibility to shape the future for the better.
