Earth2Class: connecting cutting-edge science with the classroom
Michael J. Passow, White Plains Middle School and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, White Plains, NY; and C. M. Assumpcao and F. D. Baggio
“Earth2Class Workshops for Teachers” provide an effective format that allows research scientists at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University to share their cutting-edge investigations with classroom teachers. Monthly workshops held at the Palisades, NY, campus give teachers insight into a wide range of current areas of investigation. Before each session, Dr. Michael J. Passow provides summary background information to assist teachers in understanding the scientist’s presentation. Following each talk, teachers have the opportunity to work through classroom investigations or educational technology applications based on the theme. A supporting web site, www.earth2class.org, provides additional supporting materials. These include archived versions of previous presentations, a wide variety of resources, mentoring suggestions, virtual tours, and course materials. Many of the Workshops are designed to provide connections with “Water in the Earth System,” “DataStreme,” and other AMS Educational Initiatives.
