Abstract: The National Weather Service Office of Science and Technology will present an update of the NEXRAD Product Improvement (NPI) Program Open Radar Data Acquisition (ORDA) project and a summary of the approach used to address the unique challenges of integrating a product from a sophisticated commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) vendor into a national weather radar system with well-defined performance requirements. Significant progress has been made on an aggressive schedule, thanks in no small part to the teamwork among the staff of the prime contractor, RSIS, SIGMET, and the Radar Operations Center. RSIS has employed innovative approaches to requirements definition and system development. SIGMET has provided weather radar expertise and engineering to meet NEXRAD performance requirements. The Radar Operations Center subject matter experts have supported requirements analysis and design reviews. The NWS Office of Science and Technology Program Management and project engineering staff are collocated with the RSIS project team in Norman, Oklahoma, which facilitates expeditious and informed program direction. Production deployment is targeted to begin September 2004.
