AWIPS in the Department of Agriculture
PAPER WITHDRAWN
Julius Sanks, Northrop Grumman Information Technology, McLean, VA
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is using the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) to support agricultural weather forecasting and for firefighting. The USDA’s World Agricultural Outlook Board installed AWIPS in two locations and the U.S. Forest Service is building a network of AWIPS that can support the Geographic Area Coordination Centers. These systems use a hardware configuration that differs from the National Weather Service design and provide sophisticated weather forecasting tools to the USDA at relatively low cost. This paper describes the USDA systems and discusses their plans to extend and upgrade the systems in the future.
