The Norm Phillips Symposium

Norm Phillips and the Foucault Pendulum

Dennis W. Moore, PMEL, Seattle, WA

Norm Phillips has recently been interested in the Coriolis force and related topics. He published "An Explication of the Coriolis Effect" in the February, 2000 issue of BAMS. This paper was specifically intended to avoid the solution of differential equations. His most recent published work of this sort is about the Foucault pendulum, and especially properties of its trajectory as viewed in an inertial reference frame. ("What makes the Foucault pendulum move among the stars?", La Météorologie, n° 34, August, 2001) This work will be discussed with perhaps a bit more mathematics than Norm would care for.
