A Collaboration Tool to Support Modeling Groups

Donald W. Denbo, JISAO/Univ. of Washington, Seattle, WA

Numerical modeling research efforts often involve initiation and participation in modeling consortia that involve research partners from multiple government agencies and academic institutions. These close collaborations involve frequent discussions of specific data and model results. Given the geographic distribution of the investigators and the time and financial costs of frequent face-to-face meetings, a collaboration tool that utilizes the Next Generation Internet for exploration and annotation of data and model results, enabling colleagues in other locations to see those annotations in real time, has been developed. To meet the needs of these collaborators, we have built upon previous projects: OceanShare (http://www.epic.noaa.gov/collab), a collaborative tool using the JavaSpaces(tm) technology, SGT Beans (http://www.epic.noaa.gov/java/sgt), a easy-to-use graphical application development system, and ncBrowse (http://www.epic.noaa.gov/java/ncBrowse), a netCDF and netCDF compatible OPeNDAP resource browser. The new collaborative tool expands OceanShare to include bookmarks, session editing and archiving, and access to new data sets and model results.
