METEOROLOGY AT GATEWAY COMMUNITY COLLEGE

John A. Zanazzi, Gateway Community College, Phoenix, AZ

Gateway Community College is a public institution of higher learning offering Associate Degrees, Certificates of Completion, courses and other educational settings. Located on an urban campus in Metropolitan Phoenix, the college has been open since 1968. Gateway Community College is a member of the Maricopa Community Colleges. Gateway was started as primary a vocational-training college. The college is trying to expand its offerings to become a daytime academic based college.

Started in the spring of 2003, Introduction to Meteorology (GPH 212) and Introduction to Meteorology Lab (GPH 214) were offered as a daytime course, thereby supplementing Gateway's daytime class offerings. Because the class can be used in graduation requirements instead of traditional science laboratory classes, many students are taking Meteorology instead of Chemistry, Physics or Biology. In addition Meteorology is an excellent class for some of Gateway’s vocational education programs such as air conditioning and refrigeration and the Water Treatment Program.
