Recent trends in the Southern Oscillation
Room 6C
Trends in 68-year records of Darwin and Tahiti sea level pressure (SLP) anomalies are presented. Darwin has experienced an upward trend, while Tahiti has exhibited neglible changes over the record. The Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), defined as normalized Tahiti minus normalized Darwin SLP anomalies, is characterized by a trend whos magnitude is 60% that of Darwin pressure alone. A portion of the descrepancy between Darwin and SOI pressure trends is shown to be due to the Northern and Southern Annular modes.
