Ensemble forecasting (starting with the subjective use of Lagged Average Forecasting by human forecasters in early forecasts) played a significant role in the understanding of operational NWP skill and chaos. Data assimilation has been developed independently from ensemble forecasting, but the unification of these two areas promises major further improvements in forecast skill.
