Preliminary results of a real time, time to space conversion for surface analysis
Room 4AB
A time to space conversion (TSC) of all local surface METAR reports has been produced. The system has been used in both off and real time surface analysis. Two case studies are used to illustrate the benefits of a real time TSC analysis. The case studies examine two severe MCS's. The TSC analysis is compared to the existing AWOS/ASOS network associated with the Iowa Environmental Mesonet for the first case. High wind reports were located in the tight pressure gradient located to the south of this system which the 20 minute data were able to capture. The second case uses operational data from ASOS/AWOS, ship and buoy reports and captures a wake low, meso-high and presquall low. This simplified scheme works well with 20 minute data sampling and special observations and is suitable for real time TSC analysis. This analysis is currently online in real time over the Midwest.
