AN ONLINE WEATHER STUDIES EXPERIENCE AT HAMPTON UNIVERSITY DURING FALL 2003
Hall 4AB
John Anderson, Hampton University, Hampton, VA
The Center for Atmospheric Sciences (CAS) at Hampton University participated for the first time in the National Science Foundation sponsored American Meteorological Society’s (AMS) Online Weather Studies (OWS) Diversity Program during the fall semester of 2003. Hampton University is a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) with a student population comprised of approximately 90% African Americans. The course is taught through a combination of classroom lectures and online study using real-time weather data. This course format replaces the more traditional lecture-only format. The classroom component consists of presenting the general physical principles associated with meteorology. This course serves as a technical elective for non-science majors and a degree requirement for both Aviation Management and Marine and Environmental Science majors. In addition, the course is an elective for the CAS Space Earth and Atmospheric Sciences minor. The Hampton University OWS experience and progress during fall 2003 will be presented and discussed.
