Prairie State Community College is located in Chicago Heights, a community south of Chicago, Illinois. Students take meteorology as a general science elective and have the choice between the Internet based course offered in the spring and fall semesters and an in-house version offered during the summer. The Internet based course meets once at the beginning of the semester in a computer lab where the syllabus is distributed and students are able to log onto both blackboard and the AMS site.

Students use both the AMS Internet site and blackboard in this course. Homework is submitted weekly via Email and notes and answers to the assignments are posted the week after they were assigned so that students can correct their copies of maps and other assignments for study prior to taking the quiz. They put copies of their work corrected in red into their portfolio, which is collected at the end of the semester. Practice tests are on blackboard so that students can become familiar with the test format. The practice tests are timed but they may be taken multiple times. Quizzes are also administered in blackboard.

The AMS meteorology class allows us to offer a challenging science class with the flexibility that students at our school require.
