HOW ON-LINE WEATHER STUDIES WILL ENHANCE THE GEOSCIENCES AT TEXAS A&M INTERNATIONAL UNIVERISTY (LAREDO, TX)?
Hall 4AB
Kenneth J. Tobin, Texas A&M International University, Laredo, TX
Currently, there is a minor in earth sciences at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), which was established in August 2002, whose instruction is facilitated by two tenure-track faculty. In the past two years a complete set of lower-division earth science courses has been established and implemented (Physical Geology, Environmental Geology, and Earth Materials) in addition to the long standing Survey of Earth Science. Fall 2003 marks a milestone for the earth sciences at TAMIU as we will offer our first upper-division undergraduate course (Geohydrology). During Spring 2004 we plan on offering an Atmospheric Science course. Resources and materials from the AMS on-line weather studies will enhance instruction of both our Survey of Earth Science and Atmospheric Science courses. Future work will include a formative evaluation of on-line weather studies at TAMIU that will focus on whether these materials promote an increase in cognition and retention of atmospheric science content. Qualitative and quantitative data will be gathered to support assessment of the implementation of on-line weather studies at TAMIU.
