Influence of the soil moisture anomaly on the 1997 heavy precipitation in central of US

The different initial soil moisture conditions (ERA40 and NARR) were considered into the simulation study on the 1997 summer heavy precipitation event in the central of U. S., using MM5/NOAH LSM. The numerical experiments integrated from 1 June to 20 Aug. The experiments both can reproduce the heavy precipitation events occurring in the end of the July and beginning of the August for both simulations. However the precipitation strength, location, and duration are different. To investigate the effect of the large scale soil moisture anomaly over different regions on the simulations of the heavy precipitation event, a series of numerical experiments have been conducted. The results indicate that, the soil moisture anomaly in spring can have considerable impacts on the simulated heavy precipitation events through the local forcing as well as the large scale moist transportation. The simulation of the heavy precipitation in the central United States is more sensitively to the soil moisture anomaly of the northwestern United States.
