Evaluation of the Land Surface Physics in Single Column Model and Their Impact on Seasonal Prediction

To evaluate land surface processes, two types of evaluation methods are employed in this study: preliminary evaluation using a single column model (SCM), examination of the simulated results using a regional climate model (RCM). The SCM is forced by the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Response Experiment (TOGA COARE) data and Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) over the Southern Great Plains (SGP) site. The results with the RCM based on the NCEP RSM are compared to those from the SCM data. Four land-surface processes are evaluated. The control experiment employs the old version of Oregon State University (OSU) land surface scheme with uniform surface data. The new version of OSU with the land surface vegetation and soil type properties obtained from grib files is used for sensitivity test. In addition, NCEP, OSU, Air force, Hydrological (NOAH) land surface model considering maximum one-vegetation type and Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) scheme is assessed in SCM and RSM. To examine the effect of the land surface physics on the seasonal prediction, four experiments as same as the single column tests will be performed.
