PAPER WITHDRAWN
William J. Frazier, Columbus State Univ., Columbus, GA
In the Spring Semester of 2007, Columbus State University will offer for the first time the American Meteorology Society's Online Ocean course. Columbus State is a mid-sized public university located in southwest Georgia and currently has nearly 8000 students. CSU offers a number of graduate programs including a Master of Science degree program in Environmental Sciences. Our student body consists of both traditional and non-traditional students with over 25% minority enrollment. Because Columbus, Georgia is the home of Fort Benning Military Reservation, CSU also hosts students from all across the nation as well as a large number of foreign-born students. The Online Ocean course will be taught as a combination of traditional classroom instruction and internet-based individual study using real-time oceanographic and geologic data and exercises designed by leading scientists across the nation. The course will serve a varied audience, including science majors, persons from non-science majors seeking to learn more about their world, students in the College of Education planning on becoming teachers as well as current public-school teachers seeking reaccredidation, and retired military individuals seeking to further their knowledge.
