Optimizing clutter filtering in the WSR-88D
Exhibit Hall C (Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center)
The WSR-88D Radar Operations Center (ROC), the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), and the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) are investigating performance enhancements for the NEXRAD clutter filters and options for improving efficiency of clutter filtering application. Areas of investigation include fine tuning the performance of the Gaussian Model Adaptive Processing (GMAP) filter used in the Open RDA, exploring better methods to adapt the filters to the combined clutter and weather environment, and integrating into NEXRAD an automated clutter filter control application developed at NCAR.
This paper presents current plans, status, and some preliminary design considerations for clutter filtering and application enhancements.
