Global aerosol climatology in the EOS satellite era: Sources, transport, and atmospheric effects using the MODIS satellite data and the GOCART global model
214D (Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center)
Measurements from the MODIS instruments on the NASA EOS-Terra and -Aqua satellites since 2000 has been not only measuring global aerosol distributions, but also supplying information on emission sources and transport, providing an extraordinary opportunity for improving the quality of global aerosol models and ultimately, improving the understanding of atmospheric impacts of aerosols. In memory of Dr. Yoram Kaufman's extraordinary contribution to satellite observations and modeling studies of aerosols and his unique leadership in developing the MODIS capability and creative use of the MODIS satellite data, we present here a seven-year global aerosol climatology (2000-2006) simulated by the Goddard Chemistry Aerosol Radiation and Transport (GOCART) model which has been greatly benefited from the MODIS observations. We will use the model and MODIS data to investigate the interannual variability in aerosol emissions, long-range transport, and anthropogenic effects on radiation and air quality.
