Teaching elementary students about climate variability through the Globe Program
Exhibit Hall C (Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center)
William R. Huskin, Central Bucks School District, Doylestown, PA
Intermediate level elementary students learn to analyze data, which they and students from other schools generate through atmospheric observations using the GLOBE Program protocols. GLOBE Program protocols require observations to be taken in a specific manner in order for data to be reliable. While students take the actual observations, their teacher supervises them. Students collect data supporting the NASA CloudSat satellite with ground-truthing. Students then search and analyze data sets focusing on connections between observations of atmospheric conditions and trends in climate, or even seasonal, changes. Skills are taught through the Science and Math curricula and coordinated with national standards.
