This study evaluates the cloud-radiation interaction associated with cloudiness parameterization. To investigate the characteristics of the cloud-radiation interaction, two types of evaluation methods are employed in this study: preliminary evaluation using a single column model (SCM), examination of the simulated results using a regional climate model (RCM). Both models are the components of the YOnsei University Research model System (YOURS). The SCM is forced by the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere Coupled Ocean-atmosphere Response Experiment (TOGA COARE) data and Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) over the Southern Great Plains (SGP) data. The results with the RCM based on the NCEP RSM are compared to those from the SCM data. The importance of the partial cloudiness for the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) shortwave radiation is investigated. The performance of the GSFC long-wave radiation is also compared with that of the Rapid Radiative Transfer Model (RRTM) scheme. The resolution dependency of cloud-radiation interaction will be examined.
