Intercomparison of the Stratospheric Performance of NCEP-NCAR and ERA-40 Reanalyses
214C (Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center)

NCEP-NCAR and ERA-40 reanalyses have a 44-year common time span and are readily available. This poster summarizes an intercomparison of (1) temperature, (2) zonal wind, and (3) meridional wind data of these two reanalyses from 100 to 10 hPa over this time span. It then identifies a climatology suitable for evaluating global climate model performance in this domain. Comparisons are presented in height vs. pressure, time series, and Mercator plots. Areas of specific stratospheric interest such as stratospheric sudden warming (SSW) and the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) will also be addressed.
