Development of high resolution and fast scanning radar

Katsuyuki Imai, Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd., Osaka, Japan; and T. Ushio and Z. I. Kawasaki

Osaka University and Sumitomo Electric Industries,Ltd. jointly developed a new high resolution and fast scanning radar for meteorological applications. Observation time rsolution for full volume scanning is less than 1 min. and range resolution is less than 10m with this radar system. The radar employs bistatic system which is composed of pair of Luneberg Lens Antenna, and solid state amplifier which transmits the wide band signal( 80MHz ) in Ku-band. Observation coverage is almost 40km in diameter. The initial observation has been conducted in Kyushu area in Japan, and show a very good picture of rainfall structure which suggests the potential capability as the next generation meteorological radar system.
