Examining Various Spatial Scales of a Hypothetical Chlorine

We examine a hypothetical release of a contaminant on several different scales in an effort to gain insight on how best to plan mitigation and evacuation strategies in the event of a release. Here we model the impact of a hypothetical chlorine release from the Natatorium tanks on a typical college campus. We assume that this release occurs in worst case meteorological conditions (light winds) and model the transport and dispersion in several ways. First, we examine the fine scale effects of a release around the Natatorium and nearby campus buildings using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation software, Acusolve. In addition, we run the Hazard Prediction and Assessment Capability (HPAC) using the Urban Dispersion Model (UDM) option to study the local scale flow and dispersion in the same area. Finally, we implement SCIPUFF to study the regional transport and dispersion thus completing an analysis of a release on several spatial scales.
