Examination of the relationship between snow cover anomalies over the Tibetan Plateau and East Asian summer monsoon onsets using MODIS satellite snow mapping and NCEP/DOE reanalysis data
Li Xu, George Mason University, Calverton, MD; and Z. Pu
Snow cover is one of the important factors that influence the regional climate. Previous studies indicated that the snow cover anomalies over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) are correlated with the inter-annual variability of the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM). However, there were significant contradictions on the existence of this snow-monsoon relationship based on various snow observations. With the use of NASA MODIS satellite snow mapping and NCEP/DOE reanalysis II data products during 2000-2007, the relationship between snow cover anomalies over the TP and EASM onsets are reexamined. Detailed results will be presented during the conference.
