Initial progress in three-stage plan to implement On-line Ocean Studies at New Jersey City University
Exhibit Hall B (Ernest N. Morial Convention Center)
John M. O'Brien, New Jersey City Univ., Jersey City, NY
New Jersey City University is an urban Hispanic Serving Institution (HIS) in which more than 60% of 6200 undergraduate students belong to ethnic minorities. Science majors do not reflect the ethnic diversity of the student body. The Geoscience-Geography department at NJCU is in the process of implementing both On-line Weather and On-line Ocean Studies courses, which it hopes will help to address this imbalance by spurring increased interest in the Earth and Environmental Sciences. On-line Ocean Studies will be implemented using a three-step transitional approach: (1) as a supplement to a traditional text-based course in Fall, 2007, (2) full implementation in a face-to-face setting in Spring, 2008 and (3) full implementation as an on-line course in Fall, 2008. This presentation reports on progress to date and student reactions to the value of specific AMS On-line Ocean Studies materials utilized in Fall, 2007. In hopes of stimulating useful discussion, an interactive portion of the poster features questions concerning course implementation plans for the coming year.
