Coherent structures in cold air outbreaks
Exhibit Hall B (Ernest N. Morial Convention Center)
Wintertime Cold Air Outbreaks (CAO) of polar continental air over open bodies of water result in large amounts of heat flux from the water to the atmosphere, often exceeding the intensity of the Solar Parameter. Spatial geometric patterns in the surface layer of the atmosphere, interacting with the warmer water, orchestrates this heat flux. The ability to distinguish between convective turbulent noise and coherent structures (CS) is fundamental to the understanding of the heat transfer process. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) has been employed to create a flow with CS, and wavelet thresholding has been used to help distinguish between CS and noise.
