Teaching the course of Online Ocean Studies at Houston Community College System, Southeast College
Exhibit Hall B (Ernest N. Morial Convention Center)
We have developed a hybrid course with half of the course hours using resources of Online Ocean Studies provided by AMS, and with another half of the course hours in traditional classroom activities and field trip to Galveston. The purpose of the hybrid course is to benefit students in traditional ways and in cyberspace as well. Since the Gulf of Mexico is within a couple of hours of driving distance from the Southeast College, our students can be motivated and have best opportunities to study some topics related to the gulf, such as its interaction to hurricanes, offshore currents, erosions of the coast, and tides in Galveston. After the hurricane Katrina, the activities in the port of Houston and Galveston make students more interested in the studies related to ocean. Therefore, this course will be a good geo-science courses for non-science majored students.
