Weather Decision Technologies, Inc. (WDT) has implemented a version of the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) modeling system within the meteorological operations center at the Dubai International Airport, providing customized numerical weather prediction guidance with high spatial and temporal resolution in support of terminal and flight operations. As an integral part of WDT's Aviation Weather Decision Support System (AWDSS), the modeling component provides input to a host of automated algorithms designed to alert forecasters and air traffic control personnel of aviation hazards impacting the terminal area, including microbursts, turbulence, wind shear, and fog. Additionally, tools are provided to allow the meteorological staff to view model output as well as adjust the operational configuration to suit their specific needs. The system features the use of the WRF variational analysis package (WRF-Var) as well as four-dimensional data assimilation (FDDA), taking advantage of conventional observations as well as the local radar, wind profiler, and radiometer systems installed as part of AWDSS. The various components of the AWDSS WRF are described in further detail and sample products are shown.
