Using Conceptests in online oceanography classes

Conceptests, higher-order (Bloom's Taxonomy) multiple-choice questions, were primarily developed for use in large, science lecture classrooms and are intended to provide a rapid means of assessing formative learning. Conceptests can be developed for online oceanography classes by adapting critical thinking questions provided in most textbooks. The questions can then be presented as part of online Powerpoint lectures. By using the Powerpoint animation function, conceptest questions are presented as formative assessment points in the Powerpoint slide presentations. When a conceptest slide appears, students can review the choices of answers, select their answer, and then advance the Powerpoint slideshow to determine if they have chosen the correct answer. The animation can be set up to provide further explanation or suggested paths for problem-solving for incorrect choices. Presenting conceptests in Powerpoint lectures allows online students to work with topic-related critical thinking questions that can be difficult to otherwise include in an online environment. By using Powerpoint animation functions, students receive real-time feedback on their answers and their problem-solving process. In addition, conceptest questions can be used in group learning activities in group assignments, chatrooms, real-time lectures, or on discussion boards.
