Satellite Training Activities at CIMSS: Helping to Prepare Forecasters for the GOES-R and NPOESS Era
A. Scott Bachmeier, CIMSS, Madison, WI; and J. Gerth
The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) has been actively involved in Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) and NOAA Satellite Proving Ground activities aimed at improving user readiness for near-term and future satellites. Utilizing the MODIS Direct Broadcast ground station at the University of Wisconsin, the CIMSS "MODIS in AWIPS" project has been providing MODIS imagery and products from the Terra and Aqua satellites to NWS forecast offices (via Unidata LDM subscription) since July 2006. To address the training component of this activity, CIMSS has offered a "MODIS Products in AWIPS" VISIT distance learning session to nearly 50 NWS forecast offices, as well as maintained the "CIMSS Satellite Blog" as a just-in-time satellite training resource. As a result of these efforts, 25 NWS forecast offices have added the CIMSS MODIS products to their local AWIPS, with MODIS being mentioned in over 50 NWS Area Forecast Discussions. These MODIS images and products in AWIPS offer NWS forecasters an opportunity to begin evaluating and using some of the types of satellite data that will become available in the NPOESS and GOES-R era.
