After more than 10-years of e-Learning, what have we learned?

We've incorporated web-based activities within a variety of learning activities since before 1995. We began by posting additional course material on the web, such as weather images and explanations of unique weather events (e.g. the Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald). The capability of java applets opened new web-based learning strategies and we quickly moved to incorporating interactive exercises that addressed learning meteorological analysis skills (e.g. contouring and station model decoding). This was followed by a variety of modeling events that not only taught material, but demonstrated how atmospheric scientists conduct their research. Evaluation of these activities has been both anecdotal, user impressions and rigorous, controlled statistical studies. So, what have we learned? This paper will provide an overview of lessons learned and how we currently implement these practices.
