A sectoral approach to climate services at NOAA's National Climatic Data Center

NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) is developing a series of initiatives to meet the rising demand for climate data and products, which support decision-making in a number of nationally significant industry sectors. In November 2007, NCDC hosted a specialized NOAA data users workshop to identify the requirements of the energy, insurance, and transportation sectors, with respect to data and information needs in the context of a changing climate, and to explore how these emerging information needs might guide future products and services. NCDC has also developed sector engagement teams and fact sheets to explore and document sector specific stakeholders, data and information needs, and the steps needed for continued sector dialogue. Another initiative includes NOAA's new Economics web site, which provides a wealth of information organized by data users, environmental extreme events, and observing systems. In addition, the expansion of Geographic Information System (GIS) services, web services, and portal technology are gradually addressing the “information gap” for sector decision-making.
