The University of Wisconsin Space Science and Engineering Center Scanning High-resolution Interferometer Sounder (UW/SSEC S-HIS) is an aircraft-based high spectral resolution infrared spectro-radiometer that has flown on high altitude research aircraft during numerous field experiments. During the Joint IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer) Validation Experiment (JAIVEx), the S-HIS flew on board the NASA WB-57. The retrievals presented in this paper use a Maximum Aposteriori (MAP) approach to the inverse problem, which provides an advantage over regression in that it provides error characteristics. This methodology is very sensitive to the first guess, and as such, emphasis has been placed on understanding and developing an appropriate experiment-specific climatology. In developing this climatology, the authors have emphasized the use of real measurement profiles from radiosondes and ozonesondes. This paper will explore the dependency of the retrieved profiles to this climatology, specifically focusing on upper level water vapor. Comparisons will be made with other field experiment data such as Vaisala RS-92 Rawinsondes launched from the ARM-SGP site, satellite retrievals from the Atmospheric Infrared Spectrometer (AIRS) and IASI, and WB-57 in-situ data.
