Oceanography Online Course
Hall 5 (Phoenix Convention Center)
Farnosh Saeedi, Bronx Community College, Bronx, NY
After attending the Ocean Studies workshop in Seattle in June of 2007, several forms and documents were prepared in order to add a completely new course to the curriculum of the Earth and Environmental Science program in the chemistry department of the Bronx Community College of the City University of New York. This course had not been offered in any format in any department of this college. Based on the college policy, in order to add a new course to the curriculum, several documents should be prepared and submitted to a committee called curriculum committee meeting that meets every other week of the fall and spring semesters.

All the necessary documents were prepared during the summer of 2007. This subject was added to the agenda of the curriculum committee meeting in September of 2007. This submission had to take place three times, first time, it was just presented, second time, questions were asked by the committee members and the third time the answers to the questions were submitted and eventually the committee members had to vote and the result was positive.

The next step was submitting the whole documents to the College Senate Meeting that was held only once a month. The documents were submitted once and the second time, it was approved by the College Senate Meeting as well.

Then due to the length of the time that it took, they accepted to start the course as of fall 2008. The course was added to the catalog of the college in summer of 2008. There are 18 students already registered for the course.
