The Precipitation Climatology for the Eyewalls of North Atlantic Tropical Cyclones at Landfall

Precipitation from landfalling tropical cyclones has been one of the important risk factors associated with loss of life and property. A recent study has noted increases in the precipitation from hurricanes from 1980 - 2004. This trend also applies to an increase in precipitation along the eyewalls of tropical cyclones at landfall. To quantify the precipitation from the eyewalls of tropical cyclones, data from rain gauges in close proximity to the eyewalls of the tropical cyclones as they made landfall was used. Distances from the center of the storm track to the grid location of each rain gauge was calculated and precipitation data corresponding to the time of landfall was analyzed.
