Doppler SoDAR systems in the airport environment
Hall 5 (Phoenix Convention Center)
Kenneth H. Underwood, Atmospheric Systems Corporation, Santa Clarita, CA
Airports are noisy environments. SoDARs (Sound Detection And Ranging) are acoustic based wind profiling systems that process the weak atmospheric echoes to determine wind and turbulence profiles. How then will a SoDAR perform at airports? The author has been involved in field studies at airports for almost 10 years. This paper will discuss several field programs and summarize the information obtained from the SoDAR. It will also address the challenges of operation in this environment.
