The extremely complex airspace over Memphis during the 5 February 2008 tornado outbreak
Hall 5 (Phoenix Convention Center)
On 5 February 2008, an outbreak of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms hit the southwest United States. Memphis, Tennessee was highly impacted during this event, with the Memphis International Airport being hit by a tornado. Severe convection affected this area for several hours during the afternoon and evening, which was during a peak in aviation traffic. This study will investigate the challenges faced by the aviation community, including the air traffic controllers (in the tower and at the ARTCC), the pilots, the aviation forecasters, and the meteorologists at the Center Weather Service Unit (CWSU).
