19th Symposium on Education

3.1

Assessing our assessment, how well do our meteorology majors learn?

Teresa M. Bals-Elsholz, Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, IN; and B. J. Wolf and C. A. Clark

As Valparaiso University went through the North Central Association accreditation process, each discipline came up with plans to quantify how well their students were meeting learning goals. In the Department of Geography and Meteorology, the Meteorology faculty created a senior exit exam as part of our accreditation plan. The 200 question meteorology exam is given to seniors at the end of their final semester. We have administered the exam for the past three years.

The exam covers material from ten courses (20 questions from each course) in the core curriculum. The questions vary in difficulty from introductory to senior level. The breakdown of the Valpo assessment exam by subject, results from the past four years, and outcomes from the exam will be presented.
