EUMETSAT's approach towards an optimization of training for its current and future satellite systems

Training in using satellite data for operational applications on a global scale has become a key goal in EUMETSAT's training activities. Together with international partners, especially NOAA, this is implemented within the Virtual Laboratory for Education and Training of the World Meteorological Organization. EUMETSAT together with the other satellite operators is sponsoring this activity of the WMO Space Program to efficiently work together with Centers of Excellence in setting up regular training events.

To be successful in international training cooperation, the use of efficient combination of distant learning tools together with a minimum number of classroom courses has to be further promoted and coordinated amongst the involved partners. With the regular use of the Internet and teleconferencing systems for the delivery of training resources to student groups, there is an opportunity for a more globalised approach to both the preparation and delivery of such resources.

Emphasis is placed on presenting the satellite data in a topical application context, like societal benefit areas – as called for in GEO/GEOSS. The definition of the training items follows internationally agreed syllabi. It is also considered important to provide the user communities with easy access to current and future (proxy) datasets. This helps significantly in introducing new datasets into operations.
