Progress on Next Generation Air Transportation System 4-D Weather Cube

The multi-agency NextGen effort has shown much progress toward building a net-enabled database of aviation weather elements set to debut in 2013. Participating partners include, but are not limited to, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Academia, and Industry. The goal in 2013 is to have an operational 4-D cube of environmental observational and forecast data and aviation impact variables for convection, icing, turbulence, ceiling and visibility that is accessible through a net-enabled architecture and used in NextGen decision making. This poster reports on progress made in fiscal year 2009, specifically elaborating on the following:
- Refinements in the definition of needed elements;
- Agency responsibilities for meeting 2013 requirements;
- Relation of the 4-D weather cube to the subset known as the Single Authoritative Source; and
- Preliminary assessment of elements that will comprise the Single Authoritative Source.
