The Vision 100 - Century of Aviation Reauthorization Act established the Joint Planning and Development Office (JPDO). A major goal is to provide improved weather data from multiple agencies and sources required for integration with decision support tools to reduce the impact of severe weather in the national air space. The NextGen capabilities enable situational awareness and seamless global operations and gives opportunity to align weather research within Federal Aviation Administration's Aviation Weather Research Program, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's operations (National Weather Service) and research (Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research), National Aeronautics and Space Administration Applied Sciences Weather Program , and the Department of Defense to meet long-term requirements for NextGen. This paper will provide a description of aviation research planning activities and challenges within each agency as well as proposed methods for future coordination.
