Data from three commercial, hand-held, portable lightning detectors were compared with data from the National Lightning Detection Network during two separate thunderstorm events. The detection efficiencies of the portable detectors for cloud-to-ground lighting occurring within 40 miles were near 100%. The ability of the detectors to accurately determine the ranges to the strikes was much lower.
