Four stand alone meteorological platforms providing atmospheric and environmental data for research projects were selected for integration into an existing Road Weather Information System (RWIS). Each site was configured to relay atmospheric sensor data in real time to a central server. The data was combined with other RWIS observations and provided to several parties, including the Meteorological Assimilation Data Ingest System (MADIS), Federal Highway Administration Clarus Initiative, Plymouth State University faculty and students, and the public via a 511 system. A discussion of how the implementation may serve as a potential cost effective strategy for transportation agencies to rapidly expand the RWIS network is presented.
